Looking for Christmas gifts, I thought that the Bluetooth column would be an excellent option. And my choice fell on the portable waterproof speaker JBL Flip 4 with the function of Bluetooth.
In the summer, I already bought JBl Flip 3 for myself, and was very pleased with it, so choosing a gift to my brother, I decided to give him a new JBL Flip 4 model.
At the time of purchase, I did not particularly understand the difference between the models, so curiosity prevailed and I opened the packaging to compare the JBL Flip 3 and JBL Flip 4 speakers.
Even on packaging, you can already say that in front of me is a quality well-done thing. It looks aesthetically pleasing and is perfect for a gift.

JBL Flip 4 Waterproof Portable Bluetooth Speaker is covered with a durable waterproof cloth, with a rubberized insert and comes in 8 trendy colors.
The JBL Flip 4 speaker has a Bluetooth wireless connection, which makes it possible not only to connect it to a smartphone, laptop or TV (which I practice very often), but allows to connect up to 2 smartphones or tablets simultaneously and play a powerful sound in turn.
You can connect this speaker to the TV and watch a movie with a better sound. Now I watch movies just like that. You can connect a speaker not only with a cable with a classic audio output, but also via Bluetooth.
The JBL Flip 4 speaker has a good battery, which will allow you to use it for a long time without recharging. You can safely take it with you on a trip for the whole weekend. The manufacturer promises 12 hours of battery life. As practice shows, it lasts longer than 12 hours, if not used at full volume.
To recharge it use a Micro-USB cable that is attached. But the power supply is not included in the kit, keep this in mind. Full recharging takes 2.5-3 hours.
Ipx7 waterproof allows you not to be afraid of rain or splashes, you can safely take the speaker to the beach or to the bathroom, and the manufacturer guarantees that Flip 4 can even be immersed in water. To be honest, I did not dare to do it. If you decide to try, then keep in mind that this speaker does not stick to the surface of the water and can drown.
There is also a built-in speakerphone with echo cancellation and noise reduction technology for high-quality conference calls, as well as the ability to use the voice assistant Siri or Google Now. (Does anybody use this?).
The main feature of JBL Flip 4 speaker, which significantly distinguishes this model from the previous generation, is JBL Connect+ technology, which allows you to combine more than 100 loudspeakers with JBL Connect+ support over the wireless network to create more powerful sound. This means you can connect two speakers that have this function to the stereo sound mode, defining the left and right using the application on the JBL Connect smartphone. Unfortunately, JBL FLIP 3 and JBL FLIP 4 cannot be combined with each other, they are incompatible.
Connect function was available on the previous model, but it only allowed to synchronize two identical devices with each other. There was no stereo sound, just two speakers played simultaneously.
Another difference is the JBL Connect application for the smartphone. It allows you to control speakers. You can connect multiple devices and listen to them in turn. For example, I tried to compare the sound quality of the two models, and the whole process was very easy to manage using the phone. I just chose another speaker and the switch took no more than a second.
Сomparison of JBl Flip 3 and JBL Flip 4
At a first glance, if you do not go into the specifications, the speakers are absolutely identical. On the photo below in the foreground is JBl Flip 4, and in the background JBl Flip 3, and I can distinguish them only by the lanyard.
The JBl Flip 4 button with the handset (the answer to the call) is replaced with the “pause” button (triangle image). You can change the function of this button through the application on your smartphone, and select the “voice assistant” mode. To be honest, I did not appreciate this function and it seems to me completely useless. But once it came up, it means someone needs it.
From the visible differences, I would also like to note the buttons for turning the column on and off and the button for activating the Connect and Connect+ modes. In JBl Flip 4 they are more ergonomic and pleasant to the touch, they are slightly depressed, which facilitates pressing. In JBl Flip 4 it is much more difficult to find them.
Also, the JBl Flip 4 speaker is slightly larger in size.
There is also a small difference between external membranes that vibrate during playback. Personally, I like the membranes of JBl Flip 4 more.
As for the technical characteristics, they remained almost unchanged, except that the Flip 4 frequency range became a bit wider – 70-20 kHz, versus Flip 3 with its 85-20 kHz. Simply put, the low sound became more saturated and pure. I compared the sound quality of these two models a lot. The previous Flip 3 model fascinated me, but JBL Flip 4 is just a delight for my ears.
So, let’s sum up. Why I liked JBL Flip 4 Waterproof Portable Bluetooth Speaker:
1) Sound. Very high quality and deep, and the volume is impressive. Suitable even for the most demanding music lovers.
2) Bass. On the sides of the speaker, there are moving membranes with a powerful bass, which is also very important for me.
3) The Bluetooth connection. You can turn on your phone your favorite music and relax.
4) Waterproof. You can take a speaker to the bathroom, turn on, for example, an audiobook and take a shower, gaining new knowledge.
5) Portability. You can take this speaker into the car, walk, shower, travel.
6) Color. Yes, for me, color is very important! Most often I choose white, but this time I chose gray, and it looks luxurious.
7) Ability to turn off the bass. Many are concerned that sometimes the volume of the sub-bass is too high. Fortunately, it’s possible to turn off the bass.
8) The ability to answer calls when the speaker is connected to the phone. You just need to pick up the device, press Play and speak into the built-in microphone.
